TATTERED - A two yr old baby crying in his mother’s arm. The mother shed tears petting him.

FEMALE VOICE(CONT’D)

The world is being affected as Local and international businesses feel the hands of the recession. Companies that aren’t strong enough to cope are shutting down...

INT. BULLPEN - DAY

PEOPLE SITTING IN A BOARD MEETING

They stand and leave the meeting quietly in sadness picking their files on the table.

INT. OFFICE – DAY

A man standing behind his desk with a file box, picks his box full of files and properties and starts to walk out quietly, looking back at the office sadly.

BLACK SCREEN

FEMALE VOICE

Only the strong can survive. One of the strong is WINIVE. A company owned by two sister cousins, WINIFRED the smart and beautiful one and VERA the funny and childish one.

FADES IN

INT. WINIVE:CONFERENCE ROOM – DAY

MURMURS IN THE ROOM

WE OPEN ON TWO FEET ON HEELS. They start to walk in

THE FEET SEPARATE AND WALK AWAY IN AN OPPOSITE DIRECTION. They are WINIFRED AND VERA

There are eight seats at the long conference table, three at each side. Both sides are occupied save for the seats at edges.

There are bottle waters and newspaper in front of each seat.

The workers stand as curtsy.

WINIFRED&VERA

Hello guys, please sit.

As Winifred and Vera sit at the edges opposite each other.

VERA

As we all know about Mr Wena the accountant was sacked this morning because of the discrepancies in the company’s account, we are glad to introduce to you the new accountant, Miss Omone. Miss Omone please introduce yourself to the company.

 OMONE

(stands)

My name is Miss Joy Omone, the new accountant of Winive.

CHORUS

You’re welcome.

Winifred smiles and her eyes stray to the picture on the newspaper in front of her, she furrows and picks it.

FEMALE VOICE

Winifred smiles passionately gazing at Clive’s picture in the paper, lost in the realm.

VERA

Thank you. To save our time, we will skip the normal introduction. Please, get to know each other after this meeting.

Vera looks at Winifred to pick up from there but Winifred is busy smiling at the paper in her hands, and that makes everyone look at Winifred.

Winifred looks up and sees them; not flinching, she looks at Omone.

WINIFRED

(smiles)

Uh, welcome Miss Omone.

She opens the paper to the stock market page and sweeps her eyes through.

OMONE

(smiles)

Thank you ma.

WINIFRED

(reads; smiles and shakes head)

Err about the issue of this recession and how—

TOM

Famine ma.

Others laugh and Winifred smiles watching them.

TOM(CONT’D)

Yea, this is simply famine; we are just trying to decorate it with grammar.

Winifred and Vera raise their brows at that.

WORKER#2

Yea Tom is right. This is pure famine. It’s in the bible. Everything is hard, prices are high which means no food for the common, what else could it be?

WORKER#3

Famine.

WORKER#2

Hmhmm.

WINIFRED

Alright, famine right? About the issue of this famine and how it’s affecting our products.

Vera notices Clive’s picture on the newspaper in front of her; she smiles and picks it. Some workers notice her.

FEMALE VOICE

They battle for a man without even realizing. But the irony is, while one is for love, the other-- is for status.

TOM

Madam, we really need to do something about it. It’s really affecting the company, I mean our competitors are already increasing their price and I think we should do the same.

OTHERS

(support)

Yeah

WINIFRED

(smiles)

We all know increasing the price of sausage rolls in this country won’t be that easy. Other products can be increased yes, but sausage rolls?

(chuckles)

No. Now let me ask you a question; a sausage roll is N50 and you want to increase it to what, 60, N70? Which one would be easier for you, bringing out N500 to buy ten pieces or bringing out N560 to buy ten pieces?

Others ‘hmm’, nodding their heads in understanding.

WINIFRED(CONT’D)

So I think increasing the price is out of it if we want to maintain our rolls in town.

OTHERS

(nodding)

Yes.

WINIFRED

So we cannot increase the price and still want to make great profit. I think we should cut down on the size, by size I mean reduce the ingredients. If one bag makes 40 cartons, now I want one bag to make 60 cartons

OTHERS

Good idea.

Winifred looks at one of them.

WINIFRED

Operations, I hope you agree?

WORKER #4

Yes ma’am, that’s a very excellent idea.

WINIFRED

Good, so... and for other products, do the same.

WORKER#4

Okay ma’am.

WINIFRED

(looks at Vera)

Vera?

Vera startles and looks up from the paper.

VERA

(smiles)

Yes! brilliant idea Winnie, I concur.

WINIFRED

Then it’s solved. Have a nice day.

ALL

You too ma’am.

Omone wants to stand.

WINIFRED

Miss Omone, please stay back.
